The word Glanis derives from the Celtic deity associated with a spring whose waters had strong healing power. These miraculous waters located in the Alpilles mountain range in the south of France, more precisely in the town of Glanum. The fame of their power was such that several pilgrims wanted to bathe in these holy waters.

Due to his power Glanis created a huge impact on the Romans. When this region became part of the Roman Empire, the city was named with his name.
This impact was such that this deity became an integral part of the Roman pantheon in the form of Valetudo.
The Roman goddess Valetudo linked to health and hygiene was Jupiter’s great-granddaughter. In her honour, her name was used to name one of Jupiter’s moons.
